Initial Troubleshooting Steps
- Exit and restart Steam
- If the issue persists, exit Steam and delete the ClientRegistry.blob file under the Steam installation directory (C:\Program Files\Valve\Steam\ or C:\Program Files\Steam\ by default) and restart Steam
- If deleting the clientregistry.blob file does not resolve the issue, please exit Steam and delete everything under the Steam installation directory except Steam.exe and the /SteamApps folder - this will force Steam to update when you log in
- If the issue persists, please see the Verifying GCF Cache Files article for instructions to repair your game cache files
- Also, this error can be caused by having certain Steam files set to Read Only. To resolve this:
- Exit Steam.
- Navigate to the directory where you installed Steam. (Typically C:\Program Files\ or C:\Program Files\Valve\.)
- Right-click on the Steam folder.
- Select Properties.
- Check the Read-Only checkbox and press Apply.
- Uncheck the Read-Only checkbox and press Apply.
- Disable all background applications, including Anti-Virus software and Firewalls.
For more information, please see the Disabling Background Applications topic.
For information about the Windows Firewall, please view the Using a Firewall with Steam topic.
Some Anti-virus software needs to be properly configured for Steam. Please see the Antivirus software reports Steam games are malicious topic.
- Double-check your router configuration to make sure that it is properly configured for Steam. If bypassing the router by connecting directly to your Cable/DSL modem allows the game to work correctly, then please consult the Using a Router with Steam topic for more detailed instructions on configuring your router.
Data Execution Prevention
- Go to Start > Control Panel > System > Advanced > Performance > Data Execution Prevention.
- Select "Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select:"
- Select "Add" to add Steam to the exception list.
