Important Note

Do not run this process while performing other system-intensive processes, such as defragmenting your hard drive or scanning for viruses.

Do not run this process for multiple games at the same time.

If you have problems with missing models, video artifacts (purple and black checkerboards) or unexpected crashes during single-player games and missions, please follow the steps below to use Steam's Verify integrity of game cache... feature to correct the issue.

  1. Load Steam
  2. From the My Games tab, right-click on the game and select Properties from the menu.
  3. Select the Local files tab and click the Verify integrity of game cache... button.
  4. Steam will verify the game cache files (GCF's) - this process may take several minutes. Do not verify the cache files for multiple games simultaneously - some games share cache files with other games and this may cause problems with verification.

Re-extract the Game Files

Once you have verified the integrity of your game cache files, you can make sure that your extracted game files are used by navigating to your Steam user directory (by default, \steamapps\[USER NAME]\ under your Steam installation directory) and renaming game folder.

The next time you run the game, it will re-extract the files from your game cache files. If you wish to restore your saved games, copy the SAVE folder from your old game directory to your new one. (The renamed game file directory can be deleted after you have confirmed that the issue has been resolved and your saved games may be loaded)
