Important: Please notify Daniel if you have questions about any of these instructions *before* you begin.
These maintenance tasks will effectively move all of the translated articles to new categories - if there are any errors or incorrectly-moved articles, it may be difficult to find the error and reverse the change later.
As a precaution, I have backed up all of the articles prior to sending out this assignment.
Each section should take about one hour to complete (I recommend that you do them all at once, to ensure none of the articles are missed) - there are three sections in total.
- Establish a reliable work environment
- Use a tabbed browser. FireFox is recommended - you should go to Tools > Options > Tabs and check the box for Select new tabs opened from links to make it easier. IE 7 is not recommended, as it tends to load and respond to commands less quickly.
- Delete your recent browsing history (so links will correctly appear as "visited" once an article has been updated) - you can do this in FireFox by going to Tools > Options > Privacy > History and clicking Clear Browsing History Now.
- Know your shortcuts:
- Hold down CTRL when clicking a link to open it in a new tab.
- Press CTRL + W to close the tab you are currently looking at.
- Open the review .htm file
- Copy the new Category data
- Click on the text box below the first link and press CTRL + A to select all of the text
- Press CTRL + X to cut the text
- Hold down CTRL and click the link up above the text box to open the target article in a new tab
- When the article loads, press ALT + E to edit the article's contents
- Click within the article contents text area and then press CTRL + END (you can scroll to the bottom for short articles, but it is faster to use the shortcut if you are working with a long article)
- Select all of the [[Category:____]] tags and press CTRL + V to paste the new information over the existing categories.
- Press ALT + S to save the changes, then CTRL + W to close the tab and return to the review document
