The Steam Client is strictly a Windows application, and there are no current plans to create a native Linux Steam Client at this time. Although the Steam Client is not available for Linux, there is a native Linux version of the Half-Life Dedicated Server available. The best source of information on this product is the Steampowered.com Linux Server Forum: Linux Dedicated Server There is also an ADMIN Mail list for Linux that you can read the archives and join to ask questions: hlds_linux -- Half-Life dedicated Linux server mailing list If you wish to run the Dedicated Server under Linux, you can download the Server Installation tool: hldsupdatetool.binhttp://storefront.steampowered.com/download/hldsupdatetool.bin
Quick Setup GuideFor a new install, go to your homedir and make a new dir for the server, and then go into that dir. If you already have an installation that you want to update, just use the existing hlds_l dir. 1. Make a new directory: mkdir hlds_l 2. Change to that directory: cd hlds_l 3. Copy the binary the hlds_l directory and then use the "steam" executable to update. 4. Here is how to convert the bin to the steam executable: chmod +x hldsupdatetool.bin ./hldsupdatetool.bin 5. Now make it executable. chmod +x steam 6. You will need to run the steam executable with no arguments first so it will self-update to the latest version. |
