Steam er Valves bredbåndsplatform for direkte software download og indhold håndtering. Den er en integreret del af al Valves software.

• Steam tillader dig at kunne købe Valves spil via Internettet, og tillader dig at kunne spiller kort efter dit køb er bekræftet.
• Steam giver dig adgang til dine spil fra alle computere som kan få adgang til Steam netværket.
• Steam opdatere dine produkter automatisk så du ikke skal bekymre dig om at gøre det selv.
• Steam gør det nemt at finde og oprette forbindelse til spil servere.
• Steam giver dig en nem måde at når dine venner spiller, og spille sammen med dem.

Steam består af to dele: Steam netværket (vores indholds server og de fordelte netværk af spil server) og Steam klienten (programmet der kører på din computer for at få adgang til Steam netværket).
