Important: Disable Your Anti-Virus and Adware Programs Before Launching Steam

Anti-Virus applications can often times utilize system resources that your games desperately need in order to function correctly. Since the Anti-Virus software will not release those resources, this often results in a system or game crash once your system has run out of resources to use. We strongly recommend that you disable all of your Anti-Virus software before launching Steam to ensure that the games have access to your system's resources. Once you are done playing games, you can re-enable the software to ensure that your system is protected.

Spyware, adware, viruses, trojans, and worms may directly impact your ability to access Steam - if you have exhausted other troubleshooting steps, or if you have noticed unexpected behavior and decreased performance on your machine, please download and install a spyware and adware scanner and a virus scanning utility.

Find and Remove Viruses, Trojans, and Worms

The most common way viruses and trojans are transmitted is through e-mail attachments, downloading files from resources that are not entirely trusted and peer to peer file trading applications such as BitTorrent and eMule. There are two main types of Anti-Virus software, each with certain benefits and disadvantages. No matter which option you choose, the most important thing is to make sure your Anti-Virus definitions are kept up to date and you run a system scan on a regular basis.

Commercial Anti-Virus Software

Please note: many commercial Anti-Virus software packages include much more than an Anti-Virus application. Packages such as Norton/Symantec and McAfee often include Internet Security components that have been known to interfere with Steam. Please disable your Anti-Virus software before launching Steam and re-enable it once you are done playing games.

Find and Remove Spyware and Adware

Adware and Spyware are applications that do not normally cause damage to your system like viruses and trojans can. However, they are often the source of system slow downs as well as connectivity problems. The most common source of Spyware and Adware is from visiting websites that install strange software through your browser and password management programs such as Gator.

  • Ad-Aware - This program (licensed free for home use) provides broad-spectrum scanning capabilities - if you find many spyware or adware programs when running Ad-Aware, you may need to run more comprehensive scans with another utility
  • Spybot Search&Destroy - This program (free to use) is a very popular spyware and adware removal utility
  • Windows Defender - This program (free to use) was released by Microsoft to find and remove spyware
