Regaining access to your lost Steam Account and resetting your account credentials

Steam Support will not request your Steam account password for any reason, nor will you ever be asked to enter your Steam account password into a website form.

IMPORTANT:
The Steam client must be installed to reset your Steam account password. Please see Installing Steam for more information.


Please observe the following process to reset a lost Steam account password:

  • From the Steam Login dialog, click the Retrieve a lost account... button.


If you do not know the name of your Steam account:

  1. Select the I don't know my account name. option and click Next.
  2. Select an item of information (preferably the account's contact e-mail address) to have your Steam account name sent to your contact e-mail address registered in Steam.
  3. Repeat the initial step in this process and, upon receiving the e-mail with your account name, select the I know my account name. option.


If you know your account name:

  1. Select the I know my account name. option and click Next.
  2. Enter your account name in the Account name field and click Next.
  3. Check the contact e-mail address for your Steam account for an e-mail containing your Verification Code and Secret Question.
  4. Enter your verification code and the answer to your secret question in the Verification code and Secret answer fields respectively, then click Next.
  5. Enter your new password twice to confirm the change, then click the Next button to reset your password.

Please observe the following process to update your password or secret question after logging in to your Steam account:

Changing your Password and Secret Question

  1. Go to File and select Settings.
  2. Under the Account tab click the Change password... button.
  3. Select either:
    I want to change my password.
    or
    I want to change my secret question.
    Then click the Next > button.
  4. Enter your old password to authorize the change.
    • To change your password, enter your new password twice.
    • To change your secret question, select a question from the list and enter your answer in the bottom text box.
      Note: Answers to secret questions are case-sensitive and must be spelled exactly as you enter it here.

      Click the Next > button.

  5. You will receive a notice that your password or secret question has been accepted. Click Finish to complete the process and return to the Steam Settings menu.
