For Gold Source games, please make sure that you have selected either OpenGL or D3D as your video renderer.

If you are in Software mode, the graphics will look very jagged and slow and the you might experience odd symptoms like guns firing over and over or players not moving smoothly.

This can also happen if you have too high a resolution set for your system + graphic card, try reducing your resolution to640x480 or 800x600 modes and then increment them until you find a resolution you like that does not affect the performance of the game significantly.

Running in Software mode will quite likely make the game run with lag. If you are unable to set OPENGL or D3D mode, you probably need to install the latest video drivers for your graphics card. Please be sure to follow the uninstall and re-install instructions from your Graphics card manufacturer.
