FPS or Frames Per Second (also called framerate) refers to how often a graphics card updates the still images displayed on the monitor to create the illusion of a moving image.

The higher the FPS, the smoother on-screen motion will look.

To view your the total number of frames being displayed per second in Source games open the developer console and enter cl_showfps # (where # is 0 for "off", 1 for "FPS", and 2 for "Smoothed FPS").
