This issue may occur when you start to install a new game under Steam and then try to join a server before the content for the game has finished downloading.

Usually your connection to the server will time out and you will get disconnected - it is recommended that you check the game Status under the My Games tab to ensure game's content has been downloaded in its entirety if this occurs with a newly-installed game.

If the game does not display the 100% - Ready status, please right-click on the game's title and select Resume updating if the option is available, then select the Properties option from the menu and specify Always keep this game up to date under the Updates tab.

If the issue persists after the game's download and installation has completed, please see the instructions below to delete the game folder for the game and force Steam to reinstall valid game content files:

Important Note

The following process will erase any custom mods and saved games you may have. It is strongly recommended that you copy your game files to another location to back them up before proceeding.

  1. Exit Steam then go to the C:\Program Files\Valve\Steam\SteamApps\[account name]\ folder and delete the folder for the game
  2. Restart Steam and follow the instructions described in the Verifying GCF Cache Files article
  3. Launch the game
