Important Note

If your purchase fails on the first try, please see the Contacting VALVe Billing and Support topic for instructions to contact us so we may review the purchase attempt and determine the reason your transaction was declined if you are certain that the reasons listed below do not apply.

We are currently using a system which will perform an authorization of the card without placing an authorization hold on the funds in the account, however, some banks and credit card issuers require an authorization hold - for this reason, it is of the utmost concern (especially for debit card users) that you contact us to ensure multiple authorization holds from failed purchase attempts are not locking up the funds in your account.

Credit card purchases placed through Steam are most commonly declined for the following reasons:

  • Insufficient Funds
First and foremost, please check the account associated with your card to ensure there are funds available for your purchase. If you find that there are sufficient funds, your card may have been declined for one of the reasons listed below.
  • Failed Address Verification
Make sure to enter your address information exactly as it appears on your account summaries (everything - including hyphenation and spacing - must be entered exactly as the customer service representative at your credit card issuer entered it in order to pass our Address Verification System check).
Some credit card issuers do not store special characters (i.e. forward slashes, back slashes, and hyphens) in their Address Verification records - for this reason you may need to enter an address which would normally appear as "111-22" with a separating space ("111 22") or without any punctuation ("11122") to pass Address Verification.
  • Failed CVV2 Code Match
The CVV2 code is the last 3 digits which appear on the back of your card on the signature line if you have a Visa, Mastercard, or Discover card - American Express cards display a 4 digit CVV2 code on the front of the card, just above the last four digits of the credit card number.
If your CVV2 code is not readable, please contact your credit card issuer to get a new card.
