Admin Slowhacking occurs when a player's game settings are maliciously altered by a server admin using a set of server tools which allows an admin to run commands on a player's client.

This issue will only be encountered by players who have enabled the developer's console and set the cl_restrict_server_commands 0 CVAR to allow server admins and server scripts to run commands on their client.

Admin slowhacking can be prevented by disabling the developer's console, setting cl_restrict_server_commands 1 (the default for this CVAR), or write-protecting the config.cfg file for your game.

Revert to Default Settings

If you have been slowhacked your game may exhibit strange behavior:

  • Keyboard and mouse controls behave differently or do not work at all
  • Firing a weapon immediately kills your player
  • Chat, voice, and weapon keys do not work
  • In-game alias is changed

If you suspect that you may have been slowhacked, the easiest way to revert your settings is to click the Use Defaults button under the Keyboard tab in the Settings menu.

If this does not immediately fix your problem you must exit the game and delete the config.cfg file from the game folder.

Write-Protect the config.cfg File

  1. Exit the game which you would like to protect
  2. Navigate to the game (or mod) folder for your game - on a default installation this will be:
    C:\Valve\Steam\SteamApps\<Steam account name>\<game name>\<abbreviated game name>\cfg
  3. Right-click on the config.cfg file and select Properties
  4. Check the Read-only box
  5. Click Apply and then OK
