For HL1 games, you need to make sure you have OPENGL set for your video mode if you want the best looking and best performing graphics. If you are unable to use OPENGL then try D3D mode, but OPENGL is typically much better for HL1 games.

If you are in Software mode, the graphics will look very jagged and slow and the you might experience odd symptoms like guns firing over and over or players not moving smoothly.

This can also happen if you have too high a resolution set for your system + graphic card, try 640x480 or 800x600 modes.

Running in Software mode is guaranteed to make things laggy.

If you are unable to set OPENGL mode, you probably need to install the latest video drivers for your graphics card. Please be sure to follow the uninstall and re-install instructions from your Graphics card manufacturer.
