Game Settings Have Suddenly Been Changed (Admin Slowhacking)

Admin Slowhacking refers to a server administrator maliciously altering the game configuration files on a client's computer. If you believe you have been slowhacked, you can resolve the issue by locating and deleting the config.cfg in your game directory.

For example, the config.cfg for Counter-Strike can be found at:

 <Steam Installation Directory>\steamapps\<username>\counter-strike\cstrike\config.cfg

• Find the config.cfg for your game
• Open the file with Notepad
• If your file has an entry for developer 1 change it to developer 0
• Save and close the file
• Right-click on the config.cfg file and select Properties
• Check the Read-Only checkbox and click OK

Many servers require the ability to run server commands on client machines, so disabling the Console is generally a better idea if you wish to play on widest variety of available servers.

Best Practice

If you edit your config.cfg file, you should create a userconfig.cfg file in the same directory as the config.cfg file.

Your game will load the config.cfg and then execute your userconfig.cfg automatically - you can specify any changes from your default configuration in the userconfig.cfg file. Setting values in a userconfig.cfg follows the same syntax as with a config.cfg

userconfig.cfg files cannot be altered by server administrators.
